Usually, a car that was stolen and not recovered for several years is long gone. Maybe it’s been chopped, the parts sold on the black market or the whole thing is tooling around the streets of a Middle Eastern city. But a Ford Mustang GT reported stolen back in 2021 was recovered in one piece after a routine traffic stop.
Pharmacy burglars use Durango Hellcat to run from police.
Police in South Simcoe, Ontario, witnessed the 57-year-old driver speeding and pulled the pony car over. If the guy knew he was behind the wheel of a stolen car, he was likely confident in the fake VIN tags attached to it.
Those tags were for a 2017 Mustang, but an officer noticed the one on the dash was pressed against the windshield and looked off. That warranted a closer inspection of the pony car, which reportedly was heavily modified, revealing inconsistencies in the other VIN tags.
As police looked even closer, they found the dash tag was attached to a piece of folded cardboard sitting over the real VIN tag. Talk about sloppy work on the part of whoever did that.
With the real VIN revealed, police discovered the Mustang is a 2016 and was stolen over three years ago. To the shock of nobody, the driver has a criminal history that includes forgery and theft. It’s almost like the guy hasn’t learned his lesson.
Likely the owner of the Mustang got an insurance payout after it was stolen and not recovered, so the insurance company now gets to sell it off. It will help offset some of the cost, but car theft has put a tremendous strain on the insurance industry, driving your insurance rates through the roof. So thank car thieves for squeezing you.
