Takeover Participants Can Run, Can't Hide from CHPCHP

Street takeovers and sideshows continue to be an issue across the nation and police are getting creative about how they combat them. Some departments use drones, others use GPS trackers, but the California Highway Patrol is going one step further. It just leveraged a helicopter to track down a sideshow participant.

The embedded video below comes from the early morning hours of Sunday, August 18 when Sacramento Police attempted to break up a sideshow. In collaboration with the SPD, A-21, a Valley Divison Air Operations helicopter flew overhead and recorded some of the activities going on. The helicopter crew also saw when one driver in particular decided to flee the scene at high speed.

According to CHP, this same car traveled at said speeds both on the highway and in residential neighborhoods. Ultimately, the chopper managed to keep an eye on it until it stopped at a fuel station where several police units responded to arrest the driver. CHP cautioned the public that “These events disrupt public safety by endangering innocent bystanders and encouraging illegal behavior, with the potential for violence and further escalation.”

This is far from the first time that it’s used A-21 to document and capture those who take part in such events. Just a few days prior on August 15, it caught what looks like a Chevrolet Corvette doing donuts. According to law enforcement officers, a work truck driver was assaulted when he inadvertently interrupted the sideshow. Then, as participants left the scene officers were able to catch up with one seen speeding down the highway all thanks to the overhead assistance.

Sideshows might be a big problem these days, but it’s clear that departments across the country are coming up with new innovative ways to combat them. Those who show up to these events or participate in them should be aware that officers could be watching at any time.
