TCT sports round-up for Oct. 2-8: Ballard's Paityn Noe sets new girls cross country record

Ballard senior Paityn Noe broke her own state cross record in the girls 5-kilometer run Oct. 6 at the Fort Dodge Invitational held at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge last week.

The Bomber girls, ranked third in Class 3A, placed ninth out of 24 teams in a field of mostly 4A schools. They scored 252 points.

Ankeny Centennial, the No. 5 team in 4A, won the girls team title with 118 points and Johnston (No. 6 in 4A) was second with 138.

The Ballard boys placed 22nd out of 27 teams at Fort Dodge with 657 points. Dowling, the top-ranked boys team in 4A, won the boys team championship at Fort Dodge with 55 points. Second-ranked (4A) Norwalk was a distant second with a score of 128.

The Collins-Maxwell cross country teams ran at Montezuma Oct. 6.

The Spartan girls placed first out of four teams with 28 points. The boys scored 66 points to place second behind South Tama's 22 points.

The Ballard volleyball team competed at the Indianola Invitational Saturday. The Bombers went 3-2.

Ballard defeated Perry (21-10, 21-11), Glenwood (21-15, 15-21, 15-10), Fort Dodge (21-15, 15-21, 15-11) and Clarinda (17-21, 21-9, 15-10) during the tournament. The Bombers also fell to Cedar Rapids Kennedy (16-21, 19-21) and Indianola (9-21, 16-21) in going to 15-13 on the season.

The Collins-Maxwell volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to Colo-NESCO Oct. 6 at Maxwell. The Spartans suffered a 26-24 loss in the first set, won the second by a 25-21 score then dropped the next two by 25-20 and 25-23 margins falling to 2-7 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

They also fell to GMG Oct. 4 by 25-7, 25-20 and 25-9 scores.

On Saturday the Spartan volleyball team went 0-4 at the BCLUW Invitational. They came up short against HLV (5-21, 6-21), North Tama (7-21, 12-21), Gladbrook-Reinbeck (6-21, 6-21) and East Marshall (8-25, 21-25) in falling to 2-26 on the season.

Here is what we learned from last week's TCT sports action.

Paityn Noe almost breaks 17 minutes

Noe came very close to becoming the first Iowa runner to break 17-minutes in a girls 5-kilometer run during the Fort Dodge Invitational.

Noe completed the course in 17 minutes, 9.8 seconds to top her previous state-record 5k time of 17:23.6 set at the beginning of the season in Webster City. She beat West Des Moines Valley's Addison Dorenkamp, the No. 1 runner in 4A, by 21.6 seconds for first after Dorenkamp ran a 17:31.4.

Noe will likely have another opportunity to run on the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course. It is the course where the state meet is held.

The Ballard girls had one other runner place in the top 20 individually. Annika Larson, ranked ninth in 3A, placed 16th with a time of 19:16.8.

Ava Vance placed 45th in 19:53.9, Ava Richardson 83rd in 20:44.0 and Brynn Wilson 130th in 21:31.4 as the other runners to score for the Ballard girls.

Seth Pencook ran a 5k time of 17:27.1 to place 118th as the fastest runner for the Ballard boys. Austin Shoen placed 138th in 17:45.0, Trent Payne 154th in 17:59.6, Bradley Sage 161st in 18:12.2 and Max Davidson 194th in 18:58.6 as the other runners to score for the Bomber boys.

Dowling Catholic's Jackson Heidesch, the No. 1 runner in 4A, won the boys race in 15:10.7.

Cypress Erickson wins girls race at Montezuma for Collins-Maxwell

Cypress Erickson gave the Collins-Maxwell girls an individual champion to go along with its team title during the meet at Montezuma.

Erickson completed the 5k course in 20:20 to beat the 22:35 run by Montezuma's Claire Erselius for the individual championship. The Spartans' Triona was third in 22:42.

Chloe Wierson, Ashlyn Davis and Sarah Tschantz were the other runners to earn points for the Collins-Maxwell girls at the meet. Wierson placed eighth in 24:02, Davis ninth in 24:10 and Tschantz 11th in 25:08.

Ethan Haus continued to lead the Collins-Maxwell boys at Montezuma. Haus, ranked 16th in 1A, placed third individually after crossing the finish line in 17:33.

South Tama's Tommy Tyynismaa, the No. 6 runner in 3A, won the boys race in 17:02. English Valleys' Gage Heyne was second in 17:25.

Austin Hennick took seventh for Collins-Maxwell with a time of 19:02. Hunter Lee was 16th in 19:57, Isaiah Hill 22nd in 20:38 and Kyler Davis 47th in 23:59 as the other runners to earn points for the Spartans.

Ballard girls do well at Indianola

After dropping seven of its previous nine matches the Ballard volleyball team came back from an eight-day layoff to score three victories at the Indianola Invitational.

The Bombers saw several players step up and play well during the tournament.

Right-side hitter Alliyah Thompson finished with 23 kills over six matches. She also recorded six blocks.

Brooklyn Baumgardner had 27 kills and 19 blocks and Memphis Inglett 32 kills. Brenna Baumgardner finished with 21 kills and four blocks and Kate Miller nine kills.

Payton Askelsen recorded 51 digs in the back row. Rylie Askelsen dished out 65 assists and Ally Baker handed out 46 at setter for the Bombers.

Spartan volleyball team hangs with Colo-NESCO early in loss

Collins-Maxwell followed up its loss to GMG with a gutsy effort against Colo-NESCO.

The Spartans fought to the wire in the first set before losing, 26-24. They came back with a 25-21 win in the second to even things up, but were just a bit off over the next two sets in suffering 25-20 and 25-23 losses.

Marissa Boege had 21 digs and six kills and aces apiece for the Spartans against Colo-NESCO. Hannah Kimberley had five kills and one block, Vivian Kahler 16 digs and four kills, Gracie Leslie 14 assists and nine digs, Ella Steward eight digs, three kills and two aces, Payton Steele five digs and two aces and Kiera Ruiz-Genovese four digs and aces apiece.

In the loss to GMG Steward, Kahler and Kimberley each had one kill. Steele had nine digs, Boege eight and Steward, Leslie and Kahler five apiece and Ruiz-Genovese two aces.

Statistics for the BCLUW Invitational were not available at press deadline.
