Car theft is quite the problem, particularly in cities like Milwaukee. That’s one possible explanation for why a 17-year-old was arrested for allegedly stealing a Chevy Tahoe belonging to Donald Trump’s campaign advance team.

A sheriff in California seems to have a speeding problem.

The vehicle theft happened on July 13 at 4 am while the SUV sat outside the Pfister Hotel but was overshadowed by much bigger news over the weekend. We want to shine a light on this incident to show even when precautions are taken, thieves are finding ways to swipe cars.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, police say the 17-year-old busted into the valet lockbox at the hotel and took the Chevy’s key. We’re curious just what kind of lockbox the valet station uses, because if it’s anything like what far too many dealerships and repair shops have, getting inside is a cake walk.

One security guard saw the teen driving away in the SUV and tried opening one of the doors, but it of course was locked as happens automatically once you put the vehicle in gear.

However, the teen didn’t realize OnStar allows for real-time tracking of a stolen car. Police used the service to pinpoint the exact location of the Tahoe in a Walmart parking lot. When they arrived, officers found the suspect inside the store and arrested him.

Upon searching the kid, not only did they find the Chevy SUV’s key, they discovered several other vehicle keys on him. He confessed to police about breaking into the lockbox, saying he was originally looking for somewhere to charge his phone but was curious what was in the cabinet. That’s quite the story we wouldn’t believe for a second.

As for the teenager’s fate, a criminal complaint filed against him lists out charges of felony operating a motor vehicle without consent and misdemeanor criminal damage to property. He’s been in the Milwaukee County Jail on $2,000 bail with a hearing scheduled for July 23.
