Thief Claims Stolen McLaren MP4-12C Was a Gift Vallejo Police Department

Police arrested a man in California last month after they witnessed him sitting in the driver's seat of a stolen 2013 McLaren MP4-12C. When the man was questioned, police say he claimed that the car was gifted to him by an unknown friend. The family that owned the car did not know the man and said he had no authority to be in possession of the car, police said.

The yellow McLaren was spotted in Vallejo, California near the intersection of Amador Street and Nebraska Street on October 19, police said. The man in the driver’s seat was immediately detained and the officers from the Vallejo Police Department read him his Miranda rights. It was at this point that the man told officers the car was his thanks to a generous gift from an unknown friend.

A 2013 McLaren MP4-12C is worth anywhere from around $100,000 to $125,000 in today's market. If a friend was kind enough to offer a gift like that, then chances are you would at least know the friend's name. And a Volcano yellow McLaren sports car is not exactly discreet. The thief had to know he would be drawing more attention to himself than if he was sitting in a Kia.

The man was arrested and booked into county jail. The car was towed from the scene. Hopefully, the sports car will soon be back with the rightful owners.
