Tony Stewart Disenchanted with NASCAR Product at Daytona
Even before a spate of serious accidents at last weekend’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Florida’s famed Daytona International Speedway, some involving his own Stewart-Haas Racing drivers, team boss Tony Stewart had detached himself from the NASCAR Cup Series chaos.
He confessed that he didn’t tune in to the broadcast.
“I didn't even watch. I'll be honest. It's really hard to watch. It’s knowing that you got really talented people that assemble really nice race cars and they go down there and just get destroyed. So that's isn’t something I want to watch,” Stewart said at this weekend's NHRA Toyota U.S Nationals in Indianapolis.
Instead, he chose to focus his attention on this weekend's NHRA event. The NHRA Rookie of the Year favorite is one of 20 Top Fuel drivers vying for a spot in the 16-car field for the 70th Labor Day Classic at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.
After a season-high five qualifying sessions through Sunday, Columbus, Ind., native Stewart will be seeking his first professional drag-racing victory in Sunday’s eliminations at his home track.
