This Toyota 86 Received An Engine Transplant From a Nissan GT-R

From Road & Track

After seeing the wild Ferrari 458-powered Toyota 86, it's easy to get jaded about all other Toyobaru engine swaps, but you shouldn't. A Toyota 86 powered by a Nissan GT-R's V6 doesn't sound like much on paper, but dig a bit deeper and you'll find this is a truly impressive build.

This car–which hilariously wears a license plate that reads "WTF 86"– the work of Australian aftermarket company Street FX Motorsport, and it's all sorts of ridiculous. Street FX bought this 86 new back in 2012, and installed a Rocket Bunny widebody kit in 2013, modifying the stock boxer engine along the way. After determining the 86's flat-four could only produce 545 horsepower at the rear wheels–and with nagging durability issues ever present–Street FX decided to source a swap.

Working with tuning shop GT Auto Garage, the people at Street FX found a stroked 4.1-liter Nissan GT-R engine modified by HKS. To fit the big V6 where a shorter flat-four once lived, a dry sump lubrication system was fitted and the front differential was removed, which reduces height by six inches.

The engine sends its power to the rear wheels via the same sort of six-speed sequential gearbox used in V8 Supercar racers, which is operated by steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Street FX doesn't have an exact horsepower figure, but it expects to exceed 1000 horsepower at the rear wheels. That's a hell of a lot more than achieved with the Toyota's stock four-cylinder.

Street FX has the full story on the build and lots of great pictures on its site, so check that out of you're interested. No, this doesn't seem as cool as the Ferrari-powered 86, but once you realize how much work was put in it, this easily matches that build.
