Shocking cell phone video shared to social media shows the moment when multiple shots rang out at a street takeover in Los Angeles over the weekend. The crowd scatters in a panic as the illegal event suddenly comes to an end. Sadly, shootings and other violence are common at takeovers.

Teens laugh after they crash a stolen Kia into a Los Angeles storefront and get arrested.

The Los Angeles Police Department say two teenagers were shot and robbed at the street takeover at around 12:30 am on July 20. The victims told police that three Hispanic males approached them while they were sitting in their car, watching the takeover. One of the suspects produced a gun as they demanded the teenagers’ jewelry.

But it sounds like the teens weren’t going to hand anything over. The driver put the car in gear in gear and took off, but the armed suspect shot the vehicle and hit the teens, reports ABC7.

At first the teens were fighting to survive, but later it was revealed by police they were in stable condition. It sounds like they’re going to survive but it’s unknown what long-term injuries they might be carrying.

So far, police haven’t released detailed descriptions of the three suspects in the armed robbery or the vehicle they were driving. We hope the suspects are caught and the book thrown at them by prosecutors, although in Los Angeles County we realize that’s asking for a lot.

Parents, don’t let your kids go to street takeovers. This isn’t the innocent fun you might have had meeting up in parking lots when you were young. Not only are shootings all too common at these events, so are serious beatings, drug deals, human trafficking, looting, vandalism, gang activity, and plenty of other crimes.

Street takeovers are dangerous. We’re sure many people who go to them rationalize their attendance away, saying it’s all just in good fun. But if they were to be robbed at gunpoint and shot, we think their attitude would change rapidly.
