Earlier this year, we reported F1 drivers voted against the installation of protective "halo" rings around the cockpit for the 2018 season. The FIA soon brought another design to the table in the form of a clear "shield" design, aiming to stop objects from hitting the driver without impeding forward vision. Now, we finally get to see it in the flesh.

Today at Silverstone ahead of the Grand Prix on Sunday, Sebastian Vettel was given the opportunity to test out the new shield design on track with his Ferrari SF70H. For the first time, we're able to see how the new design fits on the car, and get some insight into what the 2018 cars might look like.

The new design seems far more streamlined than the previous halo structure, with more overall coverage and less impeded sight lines. We're not sure how well the shield will hold up in the event of a tire impact, but it has to be better than no protection at all.

Now we just have to wait to see what the drivers think.
