This Video of Taylor Swift's Expert Handling of a Wardrobe Malfunction Is Going Viral on TikTok
There’s taking a wardrobe malfunction in stride, which makes you a pro. And then there’s somehow seamlessly signaling for help with said malfunction without so much as a pause in your performance AND turning the moment into a totally organic inside joke that fits perfectly with the lyrics you’re currently singing in front of tens of thousands of smartphone-wielding fans who are documenting the whole thing in real time, which makes you Taylor Swift.
Let's set the scene, shall we? It's Thursday night. Taylor is onstage in Tampa, Florida, performing to yet another sold out stadium full of screaming fans. Tens of thousands of pairs of eyeballs and smartphone cameras, all aimed directly at her. It's also her first night back on the road for her Eras Tour since news broke that she and Joe Alwyn split. Not a situation that would cause most people on the planet to feel crushed under a mountain of pressure and anxiety at all (/s).
Srsly tho, add in a wardrobe malfunction moment to ^^that^^ whole stress pile and most of us would, at very least, miss a beat. When this exact thing happened to Taylor Swift, however, her reaction was to spring into action and coordinate with other humans to fix the issue while continuing to perform. She honestly didn't even look a little fazed by any of this. Even as she shrugged and made faces to convey the absurdity of what was happening, she didn't look bothered at all, just kind of like, "Oh well. Sh*t happens, amirite?"
The malfunction itself was a mild one—while Taylor was in the middle of her "Lavender Haze" performance, her garter broke. In a video that Swiftie TikTok is predictably obsessed with, Taylor can be seen casually strolling over to her background singers and lifting up the bottom of her dress (a purple, sequined Oscar de la Renta t-shirt dress for this part of the show) to show them what happened before mouthing some instructions/pleas for help to them quickly enough not to miss any of the lyrics to "Anti-Hero," which she had already segued into performing at this point.
The icing on the cake? In addition to handling the malfunction without so much as a pause to her performance, Taylor managed to turn the moment into a very organic inside joke moment for the crowd by throwing her arms up in an exaggerated shrug and nodding like "yep. This. This is proof my lyrics are my life" as her backup singers fiddled with her garter while she sang the "I should not be left to my own devices" and "I end up in crisis" lyrics.
*Chef's kiss*, Taylor. No notes.
