The fourth-generation Mini Cooper S may not look terribly different than before, but a wealth of tech upgrades and refinement tweaks make this twee hatchback more compelling.
Mini has redesigned the Cooper for 2025, but overall, it retains its iconic retro look.
Two- and four-door models are offered, as is the racier S variant with a 201-hp turbo four.
There's still plenty of whimsy in the design as well, including taillamps that can be made to look like the Union Jack flag.
A palette of bright colors is offered, as is a wide range of choices for wheel designs and exterior trims, so customization is easy.
We sampled a two-door Cooper S in the American Southwest earlier this year and have now tested one at our home track in Michigan.
The Mini's spunky on-road driving demeanor has been retained here, and it’s a fun little hatchback with plenty of power.
All models come with a 201-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Sadly, a six-speed manual is no longer offered.
A quick 5.8 seconds gets you to 60 mph, and handling is lively, although we noted a fair bit of torque steer.
Compared to the previous-generation model, the new one is quicker, quieter, and sticks to the road a little better.
Despite its makeover though, the Cooper S is still very much a Mini, even if it no longer is available with a stick-shift transmission.
