Volkswagen revealed the ID.GTI concept as part of the IAA auto show in Munich this week, presaging an electric version of the beloved classic. It's expected to go into production for Europe first and may be U.S. bound later. Click through for a full view of the concept.
VW promises that the concept represents a future car that will be "100 percent electric, 100 percent GTI."
The concept's design is meant to be faithful to that of the original 1976 GTI.
The three-spoke steering wheel is part of sending the message that this EV is a real GTI.
The automatic transmission is operated via a steering-column switch, as in the ID.7.
The 10.9-inch Digital Cockpit in front of the driver has a Vintage mode that gives it the look of the Mk 2 Golf GTI's instrumentation.
Head-up display projects information onto the windshield for the passenger as well as the driver.
We're not optimistic that the head-up display's full-height display capability will make it to the production model.
The driver's-seat backrest has a pulse sensor called the GTI Heartbeat, visible from outside, signaling the driver that the car's anti-theft system is activated.
A minimalistic version of the traditional GTI plaid theme is used on the interior.
