Chevrolet continues to throw updates at its diesel-powered half-ton pickup, even if it's the last in its segment.
The Silverado's diesel engine is a 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six.
Thanks to improvements that first arrived for 2023, the Duramax 1500 produces a meaty 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque.
The Duramax is no slouch, shooting a 2024 Silverado ZR2 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, a 0.3-second improvement over numbers we recorded in a 2020 Silverado LTZ.
It's a pretty quiet diesel too. Our microphones recorded just 41 decibels of noise at idle and 71 decibels under wide-open throttle. Most of the time, the all-terrain tires underfoot made more noise than the six-pot.
The ZR2 clears the quarter-mile mark in 15.3 seconds at 89 mph.
The ZR2's 21-mpg EPA combined estimate might seem paltry, but that's a whopping 6 mpg better than the rating of its 6.2-liter V-8 counterpart.
On the ZR2, the diesel is the base engine. Opting for the 6.2-liter will require an extra $1500.
However, if you want to equip the off-road-ready Trail Boss trim with the Duramax, you'll have to shell out $2590 to upgrade from the 2.7-liter inline-four, or $795 to upgrade from the 5.3-liter V-8.
As for competitors? Since Ram and Ford both discontinued their light-duty diesel offerings, the GM truck stands alone.
