US proposes new vehicle requirement to reduce pedestrian deaths
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A U.S. regulator said on Monday it is proposing a requirement that some future vehicles be redesigned to reduce the risks of serious or fatal injuries in crashes involving pedestrians amid a rise in such deaths. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the new rule aims to reduce fatalities for pedestrians who strike the hoods of vehicles, especially in pickup trucks and large SUVs that do not currently meet international pedestrian protections standards. In 2022, the number of pedestrians killed in the U.S. rose 0.7% to 7,522, the most since 1981, while the number injured rose 11%.

Ford in talks to restart making cars in India for export, minister says
BENGALURU (Reuters) -Ford Motor held talks with India's Tamil Nadu state to explore producing vehicles for export, the state's chief minister said, potentially signalling that the U.S. carmaker could restart production in India after exiting the country three years ago. Ford stopped producing cars in India for domestic sale in 2021 after struggling to boost volumes and pulled the plug on exports in 2022, effectively exiting the world's third-largest car market which is dominated by Asian rivals. Ford sold one of its two plants in India to Tata Motors in 2023.

BMW braking system recall of 1.5M cars contributes to auto maker's decision to cut back 2024 outlook
BMW is lowering sales and earnings targets for the 2024 fiscal year, in a move the luxury German car maker said was partially triggered by hefty expenses of addressing a braking system recall that impacts more than 1.5 million vehicles worldwide. Munich-based BMW Group said Tuesday that actions related to addressing a faulty integrated braking system, made by a supplier for the company, would reach “a high three-digit million (euro) amount” for the third quarter. A spokesperson for BMW Group, which also owns Rolls-Royce and Mini brands, confirmed to The Associated Press via email that the company first identified the issue during an internal quality check.
