We still have some time before we're able to test a 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 in the United States, so we hopped across the Atlantic to take an earlier crack at its fraternal twin, the faux-coupe ID.5. With extra power, as well as climate controls that finally feature illumination, there are some big differences here, but it doesn't upset the ID's position as a sensible conveyance.
The Volkswagen ID.4 is being revised for 2024 with a more potent rear motor for models equipped with the larger 77.0-kWh battery option, in addition to cabin revisions that include an updated infotainment setup.
We tested the closely related ID.5 in Germany—basically a sloped-roof version of the ID.4 that isn't available in the U.S. We are told the two cars are mechanically identical.
The new motor is the same Volkswagen AP550 unit that will power the upcoming ID.7 and turns the rear axle of both 77.0-kWh-equipped 2024 ID.4 models. In the RWD version, it makes 282 horsepower, while the AWD version will put out "more than 330 horsepower," according to Volkswagen.
Volkswagen hasn't released any range or performance numbers yet, but we predict that the new car will post improvements in both areas.
The touch-sensitive heating and ventilation control strip below the newly enlarged display is now backlit to make it easier to see at night.
Other cabin changes include a revised center console and the relocation of the forward/reverse selector from the side of the cluster to the steering column.
The AWD ID.4 will have 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 21-inchers included on the range-topping S Plus trim. Volkswagen says that adaptive dampers will be an option in the U.S.; this setup impressed us in Germany.
The 58.0-kWh ID.4 will continue with the existing motor and the old car's 12.0-inch touchscreen for now.
The ID.4 will remain eligible for the $7500 federal tax credit denied to most non-U.S. EV makers since the ID.4 is manufactured in Tennessee.
