Before the eighth-generation GTI's mid-cycle refresh arrives in the U.S., we head overseas to shake down its European counterpart to see whether or not we'll miss that manual transmission.
The refresh of the eighth-generation VW Golf is a bit more involved in Europe than it is in the U.S.
European gets a hot new Clubsport variant with a 296-hp engine, and an optional package with an Akrapovic exhaust and a higher top speed.
Euro-model GTIs also see rising outputs on the base model, ginning up 261 horsepower now, 20 more than before.
Sadly, those upgrades are limited to Europe. In the U.S., we'll have to make do with the EA888's same output as before.
The 2025 GTI's freshening includes new LED taillights with available sequential turn indicators.
The headlights have been revised, and the VW emblem on the grille now lights up, as well.
Inside, things aren't much different, and yes, plaid seats are still available.
The biggest news in the cabin comes by way of the infotainment, which has been given a strong upgrade that should make the system vastly less frustrating to use.
Keep an eye out for the U.S.-spec GTI to arrive in early 2025.
