BMW's ubiquitous 3-Series has grown larger and more mature over its 40 years of existence, but the general concept has stayed mostly the same: two or four doors, relatively understated styling, excellent handling balance, and performance variants that can hang with purpose-built sports cars. It's a winning template that's attracted competitors from nearly every other luxury carmaker.
