German automotive spy photographers caught a never-before-seen wedge-shaped BMW prototype testing on an "obscure landing strip" this week, our source said.

The test mule in question appears to have similar design language to BMW's Neue Klasse electric car design concepts. So far, we've seen them officially in sedan and SUV form, but nothing as a more performance-focused two-door body style, until now.

"At first glance, the BMW Neue Klasse Coupé looks like a futuristic Buggy/Crossover with very long doors and a possible large glass dome above the passenger compartment," the spy photographer said. "But if you take a closer look, you can clearly recognize the face of the Neue Klasse at the front. Even if the headlights and the illuminated kidney grille are still camouflaged, the BMW front is unmistakable."

This prototype appears to have a very angular design, featuring many flat lines and minimal overhang off the front and rear ends. The closest production car to this in recent BMW history would be the i8, but that two-door coupe's design had more rounded edges and curves than what we see here.

The spy photographer also noted that this test mule appears to have four independent wheel hub motors. BMW is invested in the Munich-based tech firm DeepDrive, which is developing this propulsion technology, combined with an integrated braking system, in partnership with Continental. There's a good chance that's exactly what we're looking at here, considering there's no sign of a brake caliper anywhere on this car. So, in case there's any confusion, this is definitely an electric vehicle we're looking at here.

Judging by how put-together and road-legal this test mule looks, there's a good chance we'll see a lot more of it in the not-too-far-out future. For now, though, let us know what you think of this thing in the comments below.
