Whoops: Porsche 911 Driver High-Centers His 997 at Car Show
Last weekend's installment of the Porsche Classics at the Castle event held at Castle Hedingham in Essex, England went off the proverbial rails for one P-car owner, when he drove his 997.1-generation Porsche 911 over the side of an embankment and wound up high-centering the vehicle. The car was stuck for more than an hour before it was yanked free with a rope, according to a report by The Daily Mail; thankfully, however, no one appears to have been injured.
"There was this chap in his 50s who apparently drove into the grounds. 'He wasn't directed particularly well it seems! And while he was looking left and right, trying to work out where to park, he didn't realize there was a rather large slope in front of him," an eyewitness told the British newspaper.
The 997-gen Carrera S has a top speed of about 180 miles per hour, but thankfully was only going about 5 mph when it hit the ditch, an eyewitness told The Daily Mail. As a result, it didn’t appear to suffer any significant damage. Also, because the rear of the car was sitting up in the air, it provided attendees of the show a much better view of the 355-horsepower flat-six engine, as pictures posted to Facebook by one Russell Quirk — who appears to also be the eyewitness who spoke to The Daily Mail — reveal.
In case you're curious about what that insurance claim might have cost — or even if this has just rekindled your interest in slightly older examples of the iconic sports car — Porsche 911 Carrera S coupes from the 997.1 generation can be found for a comparative bargain these days, with Porsche's own used car database revealing three for sale in the U.S. right now between $35,000–$55,000. A 2006 version with a six-speed manual and 89,000 miles sold on Bring a Trailer for $42,997 (get it?) just last Thursday.
