The route serves as the main route for cross-country travelers in the populous eastern part of China, where most of the country’s population resides.
The scenes were also reportedly repeated on many roads across the country. Trains were also packed, with officials expecting more than 13 million to use the railway network.
China’s National Tourism Administration confirmed this year’s Golden Week tourism figures showed an incredible 6.1per cent year-on-year increase.
And it meant record-breaking numbers of travelers on Chinese highways.
Tourist numbers were also reported to have exceeded those recorded during this year’s Chinese New Year travel season in February.
