Yet More Proof Drivers Aren’t Paying Attention

Back-to-back crashes on a California freeway help establish something we’ve been pointing out for a while: too many drivers aren’t paying attention while behind the wheel. They just drive in a lane of travel, not watching for stopped vehicles, debris, or anything else which might constitute a hazard. Then dangerous situations like this unfold.

Shared by Fox 11 Los Angeles, the series of crashes happened in the left lanes of the 101 Freeway in Encino. That shocking footage shows as one accident after another as drivers not paying attention enough to avoid the disabled vehicles created a domino effect.

At one point, a Good Samaritan who had gotten out of his vehicle and was in the center median trying to help crash victims was almost hit as another car careened into one that was already crunched. That man had to jump onto the median dividing wall to avoid being injured or worse.

It of course didn’t help that this all unfolded at night and as the Good Samaritan pointed out afterward, at least one of the wrecked cars didn’t have its flashers on. Those lights might have been damaged or the driver didn’t think to activate them.

Either way, if drivers are paying close attention to the road ahead, they would see a disabled vehicle, lights or no. The same thing goes for a trailer left in the road, maybe a boat that came off a trailer, debris which fell out of a truck, etc.

The fact is you should always be ready for anything on public roads. Things happen, you as a driver need to adjust quickly when you do. And you can’t do that if you’re driving distracted, zoning out, or whatever keeps you from paying attention.
