Bentley Motors has unveiled plans to phase out its venerable 6.0-litre W12 engine, a stalwart of the luxury automotive market for nearly two decades. In its place, the British automaker is set to introduce a cutting-edge hybrid V8 powertrain, heralding a new era of performance and efficiency for the brand.
Dubbed the 'Ultra Performance Hybrid', the new V8 engine will not only surpass the power outputs of its W12 predecessor but also introduce an impressive 50-mile range solely on electric power. This transition reflects Bentley's commitment to innovation and sustainability, aligning with the automotive industry's shift towards greener technologies.
Since its debut in the first Continental GT in 2003, the W12 engine has been a defining feature of Bentley's most prestigious models, amassing over 105,000 units in production. However, the introduction of the hybrid V8, which will generate more than 740 horsepower—over 90 horsepower more than the W12 found in the latest GT Speed models—marks a significant technological leap.
