Featuring a rare cast-iron block and extensive documentation.

A meticulously restored 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, one of only 1,858 roadsters built during its six-year production run, is now available on Bring a Trailer. This specific model, chassis number 002840, is among approximately 270 examples featuring a cast-iron block and four-wheel disc brakes, making it a highly sought-after classic.

Originally finished in Fire Engine Red, the car and its removable hardtop were repainted in the factory shade of Graphite Gray (DB190) in May 2024. The restoration also included fitting a new black convertible top. The vehicle's exterior features include European-market headlights, bumper guards, pivot-out door handles, and a fender-mounted antenna.

Under the hood, the 300SL is powered by a 3.0-liter M198 inline-six engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection and dry-sump lubrication. The engine underwent a thorough overhaul between the 1980s and early 2000s, with recent updates in 2023, including reworking the valve seats and replacing the head gasket. The engine, mated to a four-speed manual transmission, delivers power to the rear wheels, ensuring a driving experience that echoes its racing pedigree.

The roadster's suspension system includes four-wheel independent suspension with a low-pivot rear axle, enhancing its stability and handling. The brake system, overhauled during the car's extensive refurbishment, features servo-assisted disc brakes at all four corners, ensuring reliable stopping power.

Inside, the cabin is adorned with tan leather upholstery, matching door panels, and square-weave carpeting. The dashboard houses VDO instrumentation, including a 160-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer, while additional features such as lap belts, roll-up windows, and a Becker Mexico radio with a Reims shortwave adapter add to the car's vintage charm.

The car's odometer shows 30,000 miles, with only 50 miles added by the current seller. This 300SL comes with a wealth of documentation, including a factory data card, service invoices dating back to the 1980s, owner's manuals, a tool kit, and a matching luggage set.

This classic 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster is a true collector's item, blending historic significance with meticulous restoration. It is now offered in North Salem, New York, with a clean Florida title.
