Here are the quick stats:

  • Total Takedowns: Iowa State 20, Northern Iowa 9

  • Total Match Points: Iowa State 57, Northern Iowa 42

Here are the instant reactions from each match:

125: Brody Teske (UNI) dec. Kysen Terukina (ISU), 6-3

Terukina scored an early first-period takedown and nearly piled up a minute of riding-time before Teske finally escaped. Teske escaped again in the second to tie it, 2-2, then somehow converted a scramble into a takedown on the edge after Terukina nearly took him to his back. That gave Teske a 4-2 lead entering the third.

There, Teske converted another takedown on the edge with 24 seconds remaining to ice it, 6-3. Gritty match and a good, needed result for the Panthers to begin this dual.

133: Kyle Biscoglia (UNI) dec. Ramazan Attasaouv (ISU), 8-2

Biscoglia scored a quick takedown and piled up more than two minutes of riding-time. He incurred a stall warning along the way, and Ramazan escaped to make it 2-1, Biscoglia, after the first period. In the second, Ramazan escaped to tie it, then Biscoglia scored another takedown for a 4-2 lead, then forced a trio of stall calls over the final two periods to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead — which is what they needed to start this dual.

141: Ian Parker (ISU) dec. Cael Happel (UNI), 9-5

Possibly the match of the night. Cael Happel rolled through the first two periods to near perfection, scoring a quick takedown in the first, a late takedown in the second, and building a 5-2 lead in the third.

Then, midway through the third period, Ian Parker methodically worked through a shot and finished with a cradle that netted him a takedown and full set of back points — honestly, he nearly had Cael pinned; a different ref may have called it — and added an additional point for stalling to seize a come-from-behind 9-5 victory to put Iowa State on the board.

That's a clutch moment from Parker, which made it 6-3, Panthers, after three matches. Had Cael found a way to finish that one — and he's more than capable, as he showed — that would've firmly put Northern Iowa in the driver's seat.

Instead, the Cyclones took the first step back toward tying the dual.

149: Jarrett Degen (ISU) dec. Colin Realbuto (UNI), 6-2

Degen took the next step, scoring a pair of takedowns and tacking on two more points on an escape and riding-time to beat Colin Realbuto and tie the dual, 6-6. Degen used his unorthodox style to maneuver his way into scoring position twice, rode out Realbuto the entire second period, then used some stout defense to keep Realbuto scoreless in the third period. Realbuto got to Degen's legs a few different times. Just couldn't finish.

157: David Carr (ISU) dec. Derek Holschlag (UNI), 11-4

David Carr made it three consecutive wins for Iowa State, giving the Cyclones a 9-6 lead at the break. David Carr did David Carr things in this match, scoring five total takedowns. He scored three in the first period alone — during which he was also, weirdly, called for stalling, most likely for draggin Holschlag out of bounds to restart.

But give Holschlag credit. He continued to fight to the end, working his way into a couple of shots in the third period. He didn't finish any, but he did score an escape with four seconds left to limit the damage and keep Carr's win a regular decision. Carr was a bonus-point favorite in this one, so that could loom large as we progress.

At the intermission: Iowa State 9, Northern Iowa 6.

165: Austin Yant (UNI) dec. Isaac Judge (ISU), 5-0

Yant opened the second half of the dual by capitalizing on a big second-period sequence, where he scored a takedown then collected two swipes in the final seconds to take a 4-0 lead into the third, where he added an escape. Judge was in on many shots throughout the match, but struggled to finish. Yant is normally very hard to score on, but he showed a variety of defensive tactics to keep Judge scoreless.

That tied the dual back up at 9-9 with four matches left.

174: Lance Runyon (UNI) dec. Joel Devine (ISU), 1-0

This one was … odd.

The match itself was very straight-forward. Scoreless first period, then Devine rode Runyon out the entire second period, then Runyon rode Devine out the entire third and collected a point for stalling along the way, which held up as the difference.

The difference, from this perspective, was that Runyon continually came to his feet and made Devine return him to the mat throughout the second period. He stayed active and worked to escape throughout the entire two minutes. In the third, Devine wasn't nearly as active, which resulted in two stall warnings.

Not sure that I agreed with the stall calls, but that's the only rationale I can come up with. Would've loved to have seen sudden victory in that match.

In any case, Northern Iowa reclaimed the lead, 12-9, after Runyon's win.

184: Parker Keckeisen (UNI) dec. Marcus Coleman (ISU), 8-2

Parker Keckeisen takes the big one at 184, an 8-2 winner over a surging Marcus Coleman. Keckeisen scored a takedown in the second period for a 3-1 lead, then scored another in the third that led to a cradle for two back points and helped seal riding-time. This was their second meeting this season, the first of which went to Keckeisen, 8-4. A third meeting could be on tap next month in the Big 12 Championship finals.

This win, a third in a row for the Panthers, gave Northern Iowa a 15-9 lead with two matches left.

197: Yonger Bastida (ISU) maj. dec. John Gunderson (UNI), 21-8

Yonger Bastida ensured this dual would not end in a tie after scoring 10 takedowns for a 21-8 major decision over the true freshman John Gunderson. Gunderson came out swinging, fighting his way into a couple of early shots. He looked like he possibly had a takedown out of a winn-dixie situation, but the ref called potentially dangerous, which was a curious call.

Yonger then took advantage and scored two takedowns for a 4-1 lead after the first period, then piled up eight more for the major decision, bringing Iowa State within 15-13 with one match to go.

285: Sam Schuyler (ISU) dec. Carter Isley (UNI), 3-1

After a scoreless first period and trading escapes in the second and third, Schuyler scored two with 11 seconds remaining off a go-behind re-attack to win the match and the dual.

Final: Iowa State 16, Northern Iowa 15.
