Two parents in New York have been charged criminally and sentenced in court after their teenage son crashed, killing the passenger in his BMW. That might sound shocking, and it is, because this is believed to be the first case of its kind in the Empire State. What happens with this could determine if more are to follow.

Police in Miami have a ghosted Tahoe as their latest crime fighting weapon.

The catch is the 16-year-old, who was speeding and reportedly driving recklessly in that Bimmer, didn’t have a driver’s license. Back in May of 2023 a video surveillance camera caught when the car, which allegedly was going well over 100 mph, slammed into a truck while swerving to avoid a parked UPS truck in Queens, reports CBS News New York.

While the minor driver was hit with charges like manslaughter, not all of the blame was put on him. Allegedly, the parents let him drive despite his not having a license. They even gifted him the BMW and didn’t try to restrict how he drove it, or so the district attorney claims. If that’s true, it’s pretty damning.

We have our own opinions on what kinds of vehicles new drivers should use. In our opinion, they shouldn’t be flying around in anything even remotely fast, but we know some people disagree. Even if a teen is responsible, as a new driver they lack experience and can easily get into trouble with something which accelerates quickly.

But it sounds like from the report this unlicensed teen was completely out of control, hotdogging on roads and disregarding speed limits, which the parents knew all about. And yet they didn’t take the keys away from him.

Do you think prosecuting parents in cases like this one is a good idea? Or do you think the teen driver alone should be put on trial for killing his passenger? Tell us what you think.
