Tesla faithful, rejoice! The blessed Cybertruck, in all its geometric wisdom, has climbed to the top of the heap of all-electric truck sales in the US. The month of May saw Elon’s craziest vehicle yet surpass the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T in sales, making it the top truck you have to plug in, not fill up.

Racoons mistake Cybertruck for a trash can.

That’s according to vehicle registration for May provided by S&P Global Mobility and analyzed by Road & Track. In other words, if you haven’t seen one of these oddities in your neck of the woods, it probably won’t be too long before you do.

Over 3,907 Cybertruck registrations were recorded for May 2024. That surpassed the 2,353 F-150 Lightning registrations for the month and 1,237 Rivian R1Ts registered. Of course that’s just for a single month, but it might mark a turning point in the admittedly small slice of the overall truck market.

Production of the Cybertruck by Tesla at its Austin, Texas plant is still winding up, so we haven’t seen anything yet. Musk still believes the angular pickup will become super popular, a claim his detractors have openly mocked. We still believe the product is niche, but who knows what the future might bring?

Obviously less affluent populations are going to see fewer Cybertrucks or electric pickups in general. After all, they’re not exactly cheap and in those areas charging infrastructure isn’t so accommodating.

However, many are waiting for the Cybertruck fad to die out suddenly, like pogs or the Spice Girls. It could happen, after all we’ve seen other vehicles go from red hot to absolute dogs in the blink of an eye.

If that does happen, the people who shelled out $80,000-plus for theirs might be lamenting the steep investment, or they could be like the diehard DeLorean fans who eventually got the last laugh.
