Oddball fast cars you’ve (probably) forgotten all about
The tiny Cuore came with four-wheel drive and a turbocharged engine like its more illustrious compatriot, but with 659cc on hand it was somewhat less powerful. The Mazda 6 was the first to get the company’s Mazda Performance Series (MPS) treatment. Rather than just offer a more powerful front-drive version of the first-generation 6, Mazda went a whole lot further by adding all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.3-litre engine with 254bhp.
The great road-going cars they only built once
When the Transit Supervan made its public debut at the Easter race meeting at Thruxton in April 1971, Ford could never have predicted just what an icon this ludicrous machine would become. With 435bhp on tap, the Supervan's performance was shattering. It was reckoned that the top speed was 168mph, but Supervan's aerodynamics were so poor that it would have been a frightening experience.

The most controversial cars made by Mercedes-Benz
Here, then, are 30 models which could, using the term very broadly, be described as at least partly controversial, arranged for your pleasure in chronological order. The very first Mercedes was proposed to Daimler by one of its dealers, Emil Jellinek-Mercedes (1853-1918), who named it – and his race team and even, weirdly, himself – after his young daughter (1889-1929). Designed by Wilhelm Maybach (1846-1929), the 35hp was light and powerful, and had a remarkably low centre of gravity for the time.
The cars with the shortest wheelbases relative to their size
Just look at the original Mini: 66.72% of its overall length is wheelbase. It’s a similar story with that hot hatch hero, Peugeot’s 205 GTI with a 65.32% wheelbase to length ratio, and at 72.48%, don’t overlook the original two-seater Smart…. Courtesy of its extremes of bodywork, most obviously in the forms of the chiselled nosecone and a low branch-lopping rear wing that made it to production in order to homologate its use in the NASCAR Cup race series, the 1970 Plymouth Superbird notched up an impressive eight victories in its debut season.
