To prove the speed of its 571-hp Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster, and because it could, Mercedes' British arm arranged for former Formula 1 racer David Coulthard to act as a moving fairway for professional golfer Jake Shepherd, in an attempt to set the world record for catching a golf shot with a speeding convertible. I'm sure this happens by accident all the time in Florida, with less-powerful drivers on both ends.
Think this looks easy? Shepherd's drive left the tee at 178 mph; Coulthard has to take a running start and hold a speed of about 120 mph to catch up. The Guinness Book of World Records verified that the 300-yard drive set the record for 'farthest golf shot to be caught in a moving car."
"The only way to track the ball was to keep your eyes on it all the time," Coulthard said. "It's a real adrenaline rush but it's not the most comfortable thing to do because for a moment, you're not watching the road!"
