Driving the 2015 Porsche Boxster and Cayman GTS, the modern day Dino

Every time Porsche has come out with a GTS – starting with the legendary 904 Carrera GTS in 1963 – it has been a clear anthem to sporting thrills and impeccable style. They’re not meant to sell a lot, but four-wheeled specialty items that these days can exceed $100,000 never are.

The Spanish island of Mallorca was the setting for our test drive of the $73,500 2015 Porsche Boxster GTS with 326 hp and the $75,200 Cayman GTS with 335 hp. Between the narrow Mallorcan mountain roads and the intense 15-curve Circuit Mallorca, two full days of wheel time allowed me to push both to the max.

And they beg for it.

The Boxster and Cayman S models – starting at $63,300 and $63,800 respectively – are already among the most accomplished small, pure and yet sophisticated sports cars on the market. Nevertheless, we can always ask for more, right?

With the GTS – a.k.a. Gran Turismo Sport – Porsche includes the following as standard: Active Suspension Management (normally $1,790 on the S), 20-inch Carrera S wheels with matching Pirelli P Zero tires (normally $1,560), and the 2-way electronically adjustable Sport Seats Plus with full leather interior ($2,960). Also part and parcel are GTS new-look front and rear fasciae, blackened bi-xenon headlight and LED taillight surrounds with smoked glass. And we mustn’t forget the Dynamic Lighting System ($690), the sport exhaust with black tips ($2,890), and the power/torque engine upgrade.
