February 18: Enzo Ferrari was born on this date in 1898

Enzo Ferrari could always point to when it started. He was 10 years old in 1908, and his father took him and his brother to a car race in Bologna. He would later say, "As a youngster I had a passion for three
things, three big dreams: of being an operetta tenor, sports journalist, racing driver. The first fell
by the wayside because I didn't have the voice, the second persisted but was unrealistic, the third
ran its course." That's a passive account of what happen, given that Enzo survived not only World War I, but the great flu outbreak of 1916 that would claim his father and brother. He wouldn't get his chance to pursue racing until 1921, but from there, Ferrari's drive would eventually transform motor sports and make his family name synonymous with speed.
