2015 Ford Mustang Engine Specs Confirm More Power, but More Weight
At a presentation to journalists, Ford Motor Company confirmed that the redesigned 2015 Mustang will be more powerful in EcoBoost and GT format, but the next-generation pony car has also gained weight.
Three engines will be offered when the new 2015 Mustang goes on sale. The standard engine is the familiar 3.7-liter V-6, and its horsepower rating actually drops from 305 horsepower to an even 300 horsepower. Torque output is unchanged, measuring 280 lb.-ft. At the same time that horsepower drops a bit, the Mustang V-6 gains 30 lbs., coming in at 3,526 lbs.
Mustang buyers can swap the standard V-6 for a new turbocharged, 2.3-liter, EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine. This engine debuted in the 2015 Lincoln MKC, and in the Mustang it is rated to make 310 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque. That's 25 more horsepower and 15 more lb.-ft. of torque, and the Mustang EcoBoost weighs 3,524 lbs., almost 450 lbs. less than the Lincoln.
In addition to providing what is expected to be better fuel economy, the EcoBoost engine's peak torque is available over a broad portion of the rev range, which certainly ought to provide the car with plenty of acceleration.
The Mustang GT sits atop the lineup, at least until Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) is finished engineering the new high-performance model. The 5.0-liter V-8 is rated at 435 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft., increases of 15 horsepower and 10 lb.-ft. over the outgoing 2014 model. The GT's curb weight is up 87 lbs. to 3,705 lbs. Add the automatic transmission and the Mustang GT tips the scales at 3,729 lbs.
When the redesigned 2015 Mustang goes on sale later this year, it will start at $24,425 for a base coupe with a V-6 engine and a 6-speed manual gearbox. Pricing, as you might imagine, will rise from there.
