GM announces Chevy Spark fully electric car

General Motors, maker of the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid, will sell a small totally electric car beginning in 2013, the automaker announced Wednesday.

General Motors, maker of the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid, will sell a small totally electric car beginning in 2013, the automaker announced Wednesday.

The Chevy Spark EV will be sold in limited markets in the U.S. and other countries, GM said.

Smaller than a typical subcompact, the Spark is a so-called minicar. It's a couple of inches shorter than a Mini Cooper.

A gasoline-powered version of the Spark is expected to go on sale here early next year.

In the past, GM executives have expressed doubts about the market for purely electric cars because of their limited driving range. The automaker attempted to market a two-seat all-electric car, the EV1, in some states in the 1990s. GM stopped making the car when laws requiring the sale of electric cars ended in 2003.

GM began selling the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in car that can drive about 35 miles on a fully charged battery before turning on a gasoline engine to generate electricity for further driving, at the end of 2010.

While GM had expected to sell 10,000 Volts by the end of 2011, only about 4,000 have been sold so far. Still, GM spokesman Rob Peterson said sales will pick up now that the Volt is being sold nationwide. Until recently it was only available in a few states.

Nissan has sold over 7,000 of its all-electric car, the Leaf, in about the same period.

When it goes on sale, the Spark EV will join an increasingly crowded market of plug-in cars as almost every major automaker plans to offer at least one by the end of 2012.

GM has been testing an electric version of the Chevrolet Cruze -- a larger car similar to the Chevrolet Volt -- in several countries around the world. Feedback from those tests in China, Korea and India has been taken into account in creating the Spark EV.

"The Spark EV offers customers living in urban areas who have predictable driving patterns or short commutes an all-electric option," said Jim Federico, global vehicle chief engineer for electric vehicles at Chevrolet.

GM has not yet announced details such as the car's driving range, price or in what markets it might be sold.

"GM has not yet announced details such as the car's driving range, price or in what markets it might be sold".....

Talk about a non-story, there's not even any specifications on the car, except that it doesn't come out until 2013...

Almost sounds like the "hope and change" that our current President has promised. But then again, GM is a whole owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party and its policies

So at least the democrats are creating / preserving some jobs. Better than the republicans. But that is a very low threshold.

But, consider that not every new drug is announced with a dissertation of its molecular pharmacology, so let's wait for a while to get more info on the car. The story isn't about the car, but rather it's upcoming availability.

Awww, how cute! Now can we actually afford one? Better yet, when will we actually see them in the showrooms? I'm still waiting for the 2011 Nissan Leaf, which was s'posed to hit the floors last April.

*Bring down the price!* We're *willing* to buy electrics but we *CAN'T* afford them!

WOW! Another $40,000 compact car! It's good to see GM and all the other car companys have such high expectations of the US economy that everyone can afford a $40,000 or $50,000 compact car. You can buy a house in some states for that. New cars are way over priced.

dang...what was i thinking when i bought my charger???
  • TxNonPoliticalType  •  7 months ago
GM isn't really trying, are they? No. They're not. This is "pretending" to make an electric car. When it only goes 30 miles on a charge, it's just not a serious automobile. They know that. They just want the tax credits.

How much does it cost and how much are battery replacements. Lot of things left out of this article!!
  • David1  •  7 months ago
Pretty soon you will be able to drive right onto the golf course and skip the cart rental.
  • Dave  •  7 months ago
Should be about $5000.00 , anything more is a rip off. It doesnt cost that much to make this thing.

Let me see Na! to small doesn't get enough miles sorry I drive over 300 miles every two days. Get your butts in gear other countries are still beating your butts in mileage. If your old a want to stay at home, this car is meant for YOU! No big dent in the gas nor long commute rides.
  • JerryH  •  7 months ago
Why even trust GM with cars like this after what they did with the EV-1's? The company took them back, charged the people who leased them for extra miles driven, dings, dents, and other ware and tear, and then destroyed them! Who the hell does a thing like that!
  • Bubba Bolinski  •  7 months ago
The legalization of golf cart type vehichels for roads with 45 or less speedlimits could cut the gas consumpion in half.
  • Anthony M  •  7 months ago
What a crappy article how far does the thing go?
All the other shit doesn't matter. The volt was too expensive that's why its not selling.
Sell the cars at a price that the lower classes can afford. 35-40,000 is a joke. Make it a mini truck!!! Remember those small trucks that sold so well. Get smart GM and Ford...............
  • Big Dog  •  7 months ago
That would fit nice in the back of my 1 ton Dodge Cummins Diesel great idea I could lose the spare tire and use the sparky.
  • Justin  •  7 months ago
the good thing about the volt is that it does have a generator (gas powered.) the gas engine/generator does not make it go, it stays on electric power all the time. the engine kicks in when the charge gets low. i've driven one and they are awesome to drive, handles and accelerates very well. for right now that's the best mixture of the two out there. you don't have to worry about getting stranded and the gas part isn't going to come on when you accelerate hard or anything like that. but yes, i agree the price needs to come down so that more people can afford them
