Is this the next generation of Chevrolet Corvette?

Jalopnik renderings draw mix response from Vette enthusiasts

There’s no American sports car that ignites more passions than the Chevrolet Corvette. Here’s Exhibit A: the most detailed renderings yet of the next-generation Vette, caught and released by Jalopnik today, which says they’ve been verified as resembling the top-of-the-line ZR1 not due to hit the streets until 2014.

No vehicle carries the banner of American sports cars quite like the Vette. General Motors has only produced six full redesigns of the Corvette since its introduction in 1953, and every model since 1955 has held true to the long-established template of a two-seat, fiberglass-bodied speedster powered by a Chevrolet V8. In recent years, the Corvette has become a road racing champion, even as sales have faltered due to an aging platform.

While some Vette fans hearken for a return to the split-window Stingray years or a mid-engine layout that would truly punch Ferrari in the schnoz, GM often plays conservative with the Corvette. This design of the so-called C7 update caught in the Jalopnik renderings seems safely in the mold of the current model — until you start examining the details, from the brace of scoops around the car to the rear featuring Camaro-style taillights and quad exhausts that wouldn’t look out of place on a Pagani.

Already the drawings have boiled up a debate about whether the new Vette is borrowing too many cues from too many other sports cars, arguments that won’t be truly settled until GM debuts the actual car at the 2012 Detroit auto show.

Hmm...I wonder if that may not be some sort of draft for a future Viper model? The lines - certainly the hood and headlights - resemble Vipers of the past. At least to me...

If this rendering is correct, I’m disappointed in this design. I expected the C7 to look like (i.e. or have more features from) the ‘Transformer Vette” in the movie. This rendering looks too much like the C6 with rectangular Head & tail lights.

though i'm a Viper fan and have owned a 95 since new, i've owned a ton of corvettes dating back to the 54 i bought in 1972. they are wonderful cars and in the performance world, the most durable and best car in the world for the money. just really fabulous vehicles.

i will say this about the C6 corvette. the designers have been struggling with the ass-end of this car for what....10 years now? just can't seem to get it as refined and integrated looking as the rest of the car.

GM should start making their cars lighter and smarter instead of just chasing the hp and torque numbers

Yep, nice import.........wasn't the vett an American car?

Make all the comments you like, but this is not the real C7 I know for a fact it not!

Why is it when I first saw this picture I thought "VIPER". The slopping rear deck and cut-outs behind the front wheels say Viper more than Vette.
    • Theron 6 months ago
Just a reminder: The Vette had "cutouts" and a sloping rear window 20 YEARS before the Viper was even thought of.
    • LunaticFringe 6 months ago
probably because the bowling green, KY vette folks have had "viper envy" since 1992.

theron: just a reminder for YOU....that would be 29 years, bud.

Good for Ford, smart on the offerings.
However I did not see any NEW suspension overhauls to make it anything except a 1/4 mile, and Top end car(MPH).

Being a past owner of 6 Vettes, 2 ZO6's,I have always been a Vette guy.
But I have always had a soft spot for Shelby's cars. The KTR 500,the GT350, and the venerable F40.

Until Chevy can put the Porsche's to shame track, and power, they will remain mid pack.
    Fun, and stylish.

For years I have not figured out WHY the 3 American makers have not done retro 55-57Chevs,64-66 Stangs, and Chevy Camaros,SS Chevelles.
Ford is finally waking up, they are now selling a complete 64 body kit o]for $15k.

Why not build the old styles w/ new upgrades, and keep them as CLOSE to Original as possible.Would ALL sell like hotcakes.

Vettes are not just about going fast, it's just knowing that you can. One of the few American icons that provide an incentive to work hard in order to get to own one....Love my C6!

Me ,too ... wouldnt trade it for the world

..but taking it to the track is something every vette owner should do. let that baby run free!

I miss the rallies and autocrosses I used to participate when I had my Vettes.

Looks like Chevy is stealing their designs from Ferrari.
  • mrmocha  •  6 months ago
I love how it stole a cue from the Nissan GT-R C-pillar... not even a proud institution like Corvette can deny it when it's been beat. You're now a follower... not as if the old Vettes would have been able to touch the old R34's had they come stateside
  • a.l.  •  6 months ago
Never mind the Vette bring back the Buick Grandnational the original Corvette eater I own one and would not trade it for a Vette go fast with class!!!
    • 79monte 6 months ago
FULLY agree.. but not just the grand national.. but the GNX... all black beauty with a nice little v6... but OMG the power... let's see what GM can do for that...maybe an LS6 engine the turbo and let's see a mustang pull up next to it :D

They're supposedly going to put the new reissue Yenko Camaros out with a supercharged LS9.

The Vette in Transformers is a 2009 Sting Ray Concept. Chevy's never confirmed whether it'll be produced, or even carry over in design similarities. It'd be nice, I agree. Heck, the Camaro Concept turned out beautifully.
  • Just a Conservative  •  6 months ago
They are omly selling about 1000 vettes a month. They need better styling to compete with the new mustang.... Yes , I own a vette
