Men vs. Women: Who Are Safer Drivers?

Women have a positive image of themselves as safer drivers than men, according to a recent poll.

Those condescending jokes about female drivers seem to have vanished with the Bob Hope generation of comedians. Nowadays women appear  to have a positive image of themselves as safer drivers than men, according to a recent poll. In a survey done for insurer MetLife, 51% of women said their gender drives more safely.

The evidence is on their side: Men are 3.4 times more likely than women to get a ticket for reckless driving and 3.1 times as likely to be cited for drunk driving, according to a study by Quality Planning, a research firm that works for insurance companies. “Women are on average less aggressive and more law-abiding drivers — attributes that lead to fewer accidents,” the study says.

Not that guys have completely caught on. Of the men surveyed by MetLife, only 39% claimed male drivers were safer — but 35% of men didn’t know which gender to pick. The findings did back men up on one point: automotive knowledge. The poll showed that more men are familiar with current safety equipment such as electronic stability control, which helps prevent rollover accidents.

Lower Insurance Rates for Women

Why auto safety matters to MoneyWatch: Men are paying for their unsafe behavior. Insurance company underwriters focus on what classes of drivers have the lowest dollar amounts of claims — and for now, that includes women. As a result, auto insurance rates are lower for women in most states.

A study by the web site Insweb showed that overall, women pay about 9% less for auto insurance than men. Among individual states, women get the greatest advantage in Wyoming (where they pay 20% less) and in South Dakota and Washington, D.C., where their insurance costs are 16% lower.

Higher Death Rates for Men

Men fare particularly badly when the statistics get deadly serious.

More than 11,900 male drivers died in U.S. traffic accidents in 2009, compared with just under 4,900 women drivers, according to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Based on miles traveled, men died at a rate of 2.5 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, vs. 1.7 deaths for women.

Those rates skyrocket for teenage drivers to 9.2 deaths per 100 million miles for males 16 to 19 years old and 5.3 deaths for female of the same age.

Where Gender Doesn’t Matter

The advantage women have had by avoiding aggressive driving may be eroding among teenagers — largely because of distractions while driving.

Increasing numbers of teenage female drivers had been involved in accidents or had near misses because of distracted driving with cell phones, music players and other causes, according to a survey this year that was co-sponsored by Liberty Mutual insurance company.

Lets not forget the vehicles safety. My Ex wife will not do a thing to her car until it breaks. This causes accidents alot. I just got rear ended by a woman (again) and let her go. I think there is alot of unclaimed hits because most of us guys just let them go.

You can not only thank your ex wife, but the government as well for pathetic safety regulations. Being a mechanic(and a woman!) i just had to shake my head.... In Missouri, any vehicle 4 yrs or newer does not need a safety inspection. I had to fail a 95 toyota camry for a crack in a taillamp lense, then turn around and let a 09 half ton gmc pickup drive outa here with the front hubs getting ready to fly off....sad....really.! but...most women are retarded when it comes to vehicles!
      :)

agreed, most women aren't very bright when it comes to vehicles. Your the idiot for failing a car with crack in the tail lamp lens but passing a vehicle which by your word was hazardous to others on the road. What if that car that you passed endid up killing someone? Who gives a s*** what some other shop does, you should of made a responsible decision.

how many women ask a question about why the car works, and how to maintain it, rather then just driving off after getting it fixed?

I know just as many women as men that drunk drive...cops just pull dudes over more

How can you possibly write this article and not even bother to cite the number of accidents males and females are involved in, or cited as being at fault in? Ridiculous, biased journalism.

The statistics cited don't tell the whole story by a long shot. Like a lot of people posting here, my personal experiences don't match up with the story. I have fortunately had only two vehicle accidents in my life. Both times I was hit from behind while stopped at a light, and both times by women. Also, in almost every close call I've ever had, the other driver was female. And as a police officer for many years, more of the drivers I ticketed were women, and women were involved in more accidents, and almost always at fault when they were in one.

Plus "better" is a loaded word. The article purports to present evidence that women are "safer" drivers, though there are a lot of reasons why that might not be so and you could still see these numbers. But the term "better" means more than that. It implies a level of skill and competence, not merely an avoidance of accidents. A person who can't drive at all and has never tried will have a perfect driving record as far as accidents and tickets go. That doesn't mean that they are "better" drivers. Likewise, if you have two people of equal skill, but one drives twice as many miles as the other per year, you would expect the first person to, on average, have twice as many accidents and tickets as the second, even though they are equally "good" drivers. So the type and amount of driving, and how that differs between the sexes is an important factor that doesn't seem to be accounted for here.

Yet a third factor that needs to be considered if we are going to discuss which one is "better" is the rate at which each causes accidents without being involved in them. If a driver has to avoid a bad driver, and in doing so hits something or someone else, the accident counts against the good driver, not the bad one. So these superficial measures of "safety", which itself is not necessarily equivalent to "better", are themselves subject to flaws.

Women wearing nice outfits are a distraction to us guys, expecially in summertime. Did they take that into account?

I wonder what my male friends think of this that women are actually SAFER drivers than men!!
  • mage  •  3 months ago
So what gender cause more accident, you quoted tickets, but those number could be skewed that male officers are more likely let women off the hook( I'm not saying that the case, but it could be source of bias in the number quoted, will accident numbers would not have such bias).

If you spend as much time on the road as I do you will find this article totally nuts!!!!
Women are not in as many accidents as men because the number of miles annually driven by women is much less than men. Women sometimes at freeway speeds make very bad decisions. Everyone should be a defensive driver, but MOST of the time when I have to correct for someones mistake there was a woman driving the other vehicle.

I completely agree. I can't stand how my sister who is 27 has had 3 car accidents and drives a sports car has a lower car insurance rate than I do (25) with 1 accident, 1 speeding ticket and i drive an SUV. Yes, statistics prove guys take that "chance" but I also think that since we take that "chance" we are safer drivers. All these videos you see of people messing up while driving usually has a woman driving the car. I see the same stuff on the road. People running red lights, going in to other lanes and there is usually a woman in the car.

I have taken hundreds upon hundreds of accident reports in my career and not only are about 70% of people involved women, but in about 80% of the cases, the female driver is at fault.
  • maximustar  •  4 months ago
my wife can't drive, my mom can't drive, my brother's wife can't drive, all women i know can't drive for crap. But my sister is a badass driver, I can fall asleep while she drives, she is that good. So there are exeptions. But quit saying that women are better.

Id like to see the actual data, is it that men are 3x more likely, or is it that 3x more men do so each year? Because men are behind the wheel at least 3x more so if its not adjusted for miles driven then its not accurate to say that.
  • Kevin  •  3 months ago
how is it legal to charge men more than women for auto insurance? isnt this sexist? If it was the other way around and women were charged more than men i am sure the $hit would hit the fan and feminists would be protesting.
    • Kevin 3 months ago
Women pay less because they are members of a group that have fewer accidents. Just like people who get DWIs pay more because they are members of a group that have more accidents. Insurance companies look at comparitive risk when setting rates, nothing sinister or unethical about it.
    • Ant 3 months ago
Its about time behind the wheel..With couples the Men are usually going to be behind the wheel.. not the girl.. So the insurance companies take into account who is most likely going to be driving.
    • Kevin 3 months ago
i understand all of that, however, i dont see how this is still legal. Just b/c the majority of the time this is the case doesnt mean it is always the case. I dont feel i should have to pay more for insurance just b/c I was born a male. Take into account the individual. For example, if we did a study and found that black people tend to get into more accidents than white people we wouldnt (and shouldnt) charge them more just because they are black (and i am not looking for racist comments this is hypothetical). So why should we with males?
  • Dan  •  3 months ago
Men drive more than women, more chances for an accident/ticket = more accidents and tickets.
    • Gramma Heather 3 months ago
dumb response, the article specifically stated that men were more aggresive drivers than women.....aggression=accident
    • Dan 3 months ago
The study doesn't take in to account the number of drivers from each gender that are on the road. If there are 4 times as many male drivers at any given time, then it makes sense that there is a higher probability that a male will get busted for aggressive driving.... and many things = accident, aggression is just one aspect.
  • Skins  •  3 months ago
i'd like to see the statistics of how many men are on the road at one time versus how many women are on the road. I tend to notice more men are driving than women, I don't think they take this into account.

Thats funny combined accidents by my wives (exes) are (just during our marriages 10 years) were 28 all of them their fault. I had 2 in my 35 years of driving (rear ended by the other drivers) not my fault. And their considered the better drivers????????????????
  • Kim  •  4 months ago
1st, I for one know that it would not even be POSSIBLE for me to talk on the phone/text while driving. 2nd, I trust my father driving and I do not trust my mom in the least. 3rd, I trust my 18 year old boyfriend driving 10x more than I trust my 20 year old college roommate (who is a woman). I'm not saying some women can't be good drivers, but I don't trust them. And this reminds me of how my Psy prof teaches that old people are good drivers. FALSE. my dad is a tow truck driver. He has proof.
    • Julian 4 months ago
haha im the same way.....i also reallly hate it when my grandma is driving, never gotten in an accident but she has gotten close
    • Kim 4 months ago
my roommate drives me car because I only have my temps and we were in a different city and we almost got in a bad car accident. Pretty much the only people who know are my bf, his mom, and the people who were in car with us. She is SO lucky my dad didn't find out. But he did look at my GPS and saw that she was going 91 mph on the highway. When it was icky out. And my dad later found a nail in the tire... I think I now have car anxiety when women are driving.
  • MEP  •  3 months ago
In my case...I do most of the driving when we are together. So it stands to reason that I am going to have more exposure on the highway. IF I could get her to be ready ON TIME...we wouldn't always be LATE getting to where we are going... :-) Put that in your survey.
  • Ant  •  3 months ago
Its a bunk study, Men are more likely to be driving home from a club while the woman rides, Men are more likely to not be given a warning for a speeding ticket. Its great that women THINK they are better drivers but they usually dont have the amount of time behind the wheel that men have.. most can tell you time driving = experience. Another problem is that women are not guaged correctly with accidents it doesnt take into account the percentage of women in accidents to the number of women with a liscense, it only takes into account how many accidents were women. ANd Alas the final straw., causing an accident is never recorded unless they actually are part of it. There is improvement..but women are not yet better. And unless they start picking up the guys and driving them on dates and to relatives.. They wont surpass them.
  • Marc  •  3 months ago
What about accidents? Which sex is responsible for more accidents? Sure maybe men drive more aggressively (or at least aren't as good at getting out of tickets, something that could be controlled for by counting # of stops instead of # of tickets issued). Reckless driving tickets, speeding tickets and traffic deaths can be useful stats, but shouldn't overall safety be determined by accidents (major and minor)?
  • Paul  •  4 months ago
in my experience, the girlfriend/wife won't drive because the boyfriend/husband is seen as the chaffeur/leader/the one who always ends up driving
