The Worst Cars On The Road

When it comes to quality, efficiency, reliability, safety and overall value, these vehicles bring up the rear.

By all accounts, Detroit's Big Three automakers have begun producing better-made, longer lasting, more efficient vehicles. It's a distinct change from the 1990s and early 2000s, when they fell behind their European and Asian counterparts in each category.

"This change is not even a gradual thing," says Christine Overstreet, an automotive consultant and director of Heels and Wheels. "It's like they've said, 'OK, we really want to step it up, we really want to compete, we're ready.' After past years of being so bad, they've really stepped up their game."

But with three exceptions--the Mercedes-Benz S550, Smart Fortwo and Nissan Titan--all of the cars on this year's list of the Worst Cars on the Road are (still) made by domestic companies. That includes the Dodge Dakota, Chevy Tahoe Hybrid and Chrysler Town & Country. The only American car company with zero vehicles on the list? Ford.

Behind the Numbers

To determine our list of the worst-made cars on the road, we started with the lowest-rated vehicles from six reliability and performance studies conducted this year by Consumer Reports.

Any car, truck or SUV named among the worst in at least two of those studies made the final cut to be on the "Worst" list.

We should note that the Mercedes S550 is the only vehicle that qualified for our list because of a high cost of ownership, low fuel efficiency and a low rating for overall value, not because of any problems with reliability, safety or performance, which affected every other vehicle in the top 10. Indeed, luxury vehicles like that sedan and the Cadillac Escalade are arguably at a disadvantage on lists like this--their luxurious interior upgrades, high-quality trim and powerful engines work against them.

"The worst value, the highest cost of ownership--you've got to remember there is a numerator and a denominator in these things," says Terry Woychowski, the vice president for quality and global launches for General Motors. "To use an analogy of a watch: If you looked at dollars to buy a watch vs. accuracy of time, you'd probably buy a Casio. [Compare that] to the price and value in a Rolex--you'd say, 'Well, shoot. It costs so much!' For vehicles like this, it's an uphill battle."

We should also note that nearly every car or truck made today is safer, more efficient and more reliable than anything on the road even as recently as 15 years ago. But that doesn't excuse just how often vehicles like the Jeep Liberty are panned for poor reliability or poor fuel economy--or both.

Jeep's Liberty and Wrangler earned spots on Consumer Reports' Least Reliable list for 2011. The Wrangler also received Consumer Reports' Worst Value and Worst Cars distinctions, the latter of which is based on more than 50 individual Consumer Reports tests and evaluations. The Wrangler also appeared on our Worst Cars list last year.

Doug Betts, Chrysler's senior vice president of quality, says the Consumer Reports tests don't reflect the latest, most up-to-date vehicles the company is currently manufacturing. The cars and trucks Chrysler has coming off the line now are far better than cars made even last year, he said in a statement about the reports.

"Customers will see 16 all-new or significantly updated vehicles at Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Fiat dealers this year," Betts said. "These vehicles represent a new level of interior refinement, world-class fit and finish and significantly enhanced driving dynamics."

Similarly, and despite significant improvements since hitting bottom in 2009, GM has some work to do before it can regain a good reputation fleet-wide. Four GM-made vehicles--the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Tahoe Hybrid, Chevrolet Colorado, and Chevrolet Aveo/Aveo5--are ranked as among the worst on the market today. All but the Tahoe Hybrid qualified for the Worst Cars list last year as well.

worst autos on the road, the ones with car stereos, the ones with open pipes the ones with people who need to be looked at, and then there are these stupid women who talk on their phones,it would be great to see these women and men lose their driver,s licenses., take their vehilcles away from them,be a great thing, less traffic, less polution, probably dishonest conversation on the phone, while criving dishonest unethical business practice talking on the phone while driving, sue the business, phony business execs, the women are so dishonest, i don,t want to go in a bank with women present ,the women want to rob everything, or want to get rid of people, their creepy husbands and boyfriends, with them robbery is everywhere

I have a mach stereo system and loud magnaflow x pipes hooked to flowmaster 40 series mufflers, 4.10 gear ratio keeps the car constantly producing an exhaust note, and I drive around in 4th gear because I can afford the gas, and greenhouse gasses causing global warming are a bunch of BS. But its people like you in the Prius everyone gawks at.

LOL. It's clear that MV is a sexist pig as well as an ignorant pompous ass. He has no idea what he is talking about or how to use to correct form of the English language. I will have 2 degrees from college this December and I would bet that he has none. It's funny he doesn't want to go into a bank with women present when statistically the majority of tellers AND bankers AND managers ARE WOMEN that work for these banks, myself included at the moment. I may be a woman, but I have a perfect driving record. Always have. It's funny to me because I just watched a MAN drive into a WALL today because he wasn't paying attention.... I'm just saying, I think that there should be some sort of level of intelligence in order to post things for all to see...however, then it wouldn't be as amusing for people to read the uneducated rubbish that people regurgitate. :-) So thank you for the entertainment! ;-)

We had a '90 Buick LeSabre that went over 350,000 and is still going for our grandson.with no major work on the drive train. We now have a Buick LaCrosse and love it.

The owner and driver has a lot to do with how well a vehicle performs. Show me a vehicle that has been taken care of properly, serviced regularly, driven appropriately and you will more than likely find a happy owner and an exceptional vehicle despite the ratings.

Bullshit ! If it's junk, it's junk ! Jeep has made junk for decades, most of what Chrysler has made as a company has been junk! Cheap parts, planned obsolesce !
    • Jacob 1 year 0 months ago
Planned obsolescence is right. You are better off buying a used car from the 1980's and keeping up with the repairs. These plastic junk boxes will never make it past 10 years. I would never buy anything with a computer in it.

Interesting because Jeep Wrangle is listed under the worst. Although I have had 2010 for only 3 months I drove it on a 5000 mile trip and it did well. And all the reviews by owners listed were that it performed well.
    • Last in Line 1 year 0 months ago
Jim I'm with you. I had a used Liberty for over a year and it ran flawless, and I did nothing to it but drive it. These people are full of shi7.

    Very interesting!! No Hummer?
    • TheOracle 1 year 0 months ago
I believe the Hummer is no longer produced so that would have to be the ONLY reason it's not on the list. People that have bought these monstrosities didn't know what they were getting into at the time, or their ego was inversely proportional to their brain size.
    • SemperFi 1 year 0 months ago
Hummer is now a Chinese Company! Has been for over 2 years !

Consumers were too ashamed even to report it.
  • GregC  •  1 year 0 months ago
Consumer's reports is the biggest bunch of idiots... Some of what they say *might* be correct, but I can't take anything they say as being accurate. I've bought items that they have deemed a top product, which later turned out to be junk with class action lawsuits, etc. I will not forget years ago when they reviewed VCR's. One was rated high, the other near the bottom... little did they know they were the SAME manufacturer with a different faceplate and brand name. Only due to the top brand having a more established reputation.

I find it interesting that Ford did not make the 'worst' list and was the only Detroit Company that did not have their hand out during the near collapse of the big gun car company's. Kudo's for you Ford!

Consumer Reports relies on their subscribers as well as their own tests for their evaluations. Because they cater to the more affluent, they tend to lean toward imports both from Europe and Japan for their automobile reccomendations.
  • Ernest  •  1 year 0 months ago
yes very interesting and touchers eye. I like it

Chrysler can't even make a car that lets the windows stay up, BMW sells a vehicle without real tires on it that don't even last 100000 miles and ,no one can make an automatic transmission that actually works..t te.
  • Jeff Richey  •  1 year 0 months ago
I went to buy an American Car.Chevy Aveo was 12,000$. Engine Made in Korea, Transmission made in Japan, assembled in Taiwan; not my Idea of American. Chevy Cobalt; Mostly USA made, Transmission in Mexico, Lets go down the street. Ford Focus Made In USA, Engine, transmission, assembly, you name it, AMERICAN MADE. I Bought One!

    Very interesting and tough tested.
  • Ruben  •  1 year 0 months ago
the numbers do not lie, but if the American people do not support it and buy their products trust me in 10 years to 90 percent the cars in America will be from Japan and Hong Kong and it hurts a lot. if not tell me how many American appliances you have at home? so the same will happen to the auto industry if we fail to dream.
  • Accoo Group  •  1 year 0 months ago
Yes, I like chrysler sedan and Hummer H1
  • Ron  •  1 year 0 months ago
ONe thing I notice is that my 09 focus gets much better mpg than consumer reports said it did, they must have tested the mileage on an uphill run only, also it has been 100 % reliable to 110,000 miles.
