Undisguised New Porsche 911 Caught On Tape

In a fit of surprising (or possibly deliberate) carelessness, Porsche's test engineers have been caught on video with an undisguised next generation 911, well before its official unveiling.

The short film, captured on a mobile phone, shows a brown 911 leaving an Esso station. The amateur cameraman follows the car to a traffic light to catch the sights and awesome sounds of it speeding away.

Despite the car clearly being a pre-production model, it is virtually undisguised and gives us the best look yet at how the newcomer — whose Porsche internal model designation is 991 — will look.

There is no Porsche badge on the rear and the lights are taped over, but their shape is obvious. It is wearing classic 'Turbo' style alloy wheels, suggesting this is a Turbo model, although that's not certain.

The distinctive, raw burble of the six-cylinder boxer engine is clear, as is the fact that the 911's basic shape has stayed true to heritage. No surprises there.

The major change is the headlamps, which are no longer circular but more of an oval design that's similar to those on the Boxster and Cayman — and a partial return to the fried-egg-shaped lamps of the 996 generation 911.

Eagle-eyed viewers will note the different shaped wing mirrors and the flatter taillights. It's not clear why the roof panel of this test car appears to be detached.

The interior, which can't be seen in the video, is known to take inspiration from those in the Cayenne and Panamera, with a button-heavy center console. It will be a more dramatic transformation than the exterior.

The standard 991 generation 911 Carrera will get a 3.4-liter engine with around 350 hp, while the Carrera S will have closer to 400 hp. The 911 Turbo is expected to hit the supercar leagues, with close to 550 hp.

The new Porsche 911 will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
