With small cars all the rage as the 1970s began, Chrysler didn't have sufficiently deep pockets to design its own US-market subcompacts from scratch. The European outposts of the Chrysler Empire were tapped for the Simca 1204 and Plymouth Cricket (known as the Simca 1100 and Hillman Avenger in their homelands), with miserable sales results… but at the same time, a deal was struck with Mitsubishi to import the Colt Galant, starting in the 1971 model year. The Dodge Colt, as it was known, became a big sales success; here's a magazine advertisement for the wagon version of the 1973 Colt.
