Update: The first ND Miata sold at auction on Bring a Trailer for $99,787. At the same time, Flyin' Miata announced that they'd no longer be converting cars to V-8s thanks to stringent regulations.

The ND-generation Mazda Miata is one of our all-time favorite cars. Two of our staffers–I'm one of them–own an ND, and multiple others wish they did. It's a wonderfully balanced car that's just a delight to drive, though sometimes more power would be welcome.

In 2016, when the car was released, our pals at Flyin' Miata thought the same thing and set out to fix it a few ways, the most aggressive of which was ripping out Mazda's 2.0 liter inline-4 and six-speed manual, replacing it with an LS3 V-8 , a Tremec T56 transmission, and a Pontiac G8 diff. There are also Fox Racing coilovers, Wilwood brakes, and a roll bar from Miata specialists Hard Dog. Also, it doesn't have traction or stability control. In this application, the crate motor has 525 hp and the Miata still weighs less than 2700 pounds.

Now you can buy this, Flyin' Miata's development car that's for sale on Bring a Trailer. We've tested it multiple times over the years, and found out just how quick and fun it really is. In 2016, we did the first track test of it at Laguna Seca and we featured it again in 2019 after it had been further fettled by the team at Flyin' Miata.

It's a hell of a thing. All the delight of a Miata with the raw power of a Corvette, a modern Shelby Cobra without a signature on the dash. It'll rip off laps on track with no issue, sit on the highway comfortably, and conquer a back road. Of course, if you want to go far, you'll need to be light on the throttle. It still has the Miata's original 12-gallon fuel tank. In 2019, we estimated range at 150 miles, if you're lucky.

This Miata is on Bring a Trailer for the next week. If I didn't already have a Miata in the garage, I'd join you in bidding.
