Yahoo Autos The Ford Mustang Is the Best-Selling Sports Car Once More
The Ford Mustang has just managed to take its sales crown back from the now-defunct Dodge Challenger on the back of the new S650 model.
With a total of 48,605 pony cars sold over the last 12 months, the Mustang is officially the best-selling sports car in America for 2023, sales data shows.
Ford certainly owes part of the Mustang’s sales crown to the car’s Q4 performance, which saw an increase of 21 percent year-over-year. That is the result of the seventh-generation S650 model arriving to customers toward the end of the year, complete with reworked bodywork, improved powertrains, and a much-improved interior with loads of tech. The pony car was further bolstered by the all-new Dark Horse performance trim adding a bit of excitement to the mix.
The refreshed package seems to have been enough to tempt folks away from the Dodge Challenger, which bested the Mustang for a segment victory back in 2022. Dodge did manage to sell an impressive 44,960 during its final sales year, but that was not enough to keep pace with the refreshed competitor from Dearborn. It is also worth noting that while not a sports car by definition, the Dodge Charger dominated all of the other American performance cars, with 75,920 units throughout 2023.
Other standout segment performers include the Mazda MX-5 Miata, which sold some 8973 units through December 2023. That figure might not be on the same level as something like the pony car icons, but it dwarfs the 2652 Toyota Supras sold in the same time. Enthusiasts also don’t seem to be taken with the other reborn Japanese sports car on the market either, with the Nissan Z only capturing 1771 buyers in 2023.
This year is an important one for the Ford brand, as the Mustang is entering its 60th anniversary. The automaker is wasting no time in getting as many Mustangs in front of enthusiasts as possible, with the pony car slated to race all over the world in a number of different series. Ford also plans to release the Mustang GTD before year’s end. With no Challenger or Camaro to fight for the sales crown, 2024 is already shaping up to be another Mustang victory.
