LiveWire Releases and Sells Out New S2 Del Mar Electric Motorcycle

• Previously offering only one model, Harley-Davidson off-shoot LiveWire adds a new middleweight motorcycle to its fully electric lineup.

• The new S2 Del Mar is set to weigh less than 440 pounds, produce 80 hp, and deliver 100 miles of city range.

• With a targeted MSRP of $15,000, LiveWire aims to make its offerings more accessible and to compete with middleweight segment leader Zero Motorcycles.

Loping twins and screaming fours once dominated the soundscape of city traffic. Now, all you’ll hear is a whine. With a flat track inspired look and approachable dimensions, LiveWire launches its second bike as the new S2 Del Mar model. With all 100 launch-edition models sold out in 20 minutes, the new EV bike is set to shake up the electric motorcycle market.

The electric subsidiary of Harley-Davidson aims to capture youthful motorcyclists, advertising the S2 Del Mar as a tool for urban mobility. Rolling on model-developed Dunlop DT1 tires and cast aluminum 19-inch wheels front and back, the S2 Del Mar capitalizes on the pseudo flat track racing design while retaining street-able bones. Eighty horsepower and a target curb weight of 435 pounds characterize the model as middleweight, at least in today’s motorcycling market.

That’s not to say this will be a slow bike. With a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds or better, it's sure to provide the immediate surge of torque afforded by electric power. How you choose to use that power, however, will be key to maximizing the claimed 100 miles of city range.

As compared to the original LiveWire One model, the S2 Del Mar scales back on all fronts. It weighs over 100 lbs less, has 20 fewer horses, and arrives with a range that falls nearly 50 miles short of its sibling. With the smaller S2 frame—built on the same Arrow EV platform as the One—the new middleweight sheds some amenities for the sake of access. However, the S2 Del Mar is compatible with Level 1 (120-Volt) and Level 2 (240-Volt) charging, while the One could only charge at Level 1.

While the launch edition of the S2 Del Mar sold for $17,699, LiveWire aims for a regular MSRP of $15,000. It falls reasonably in the middle of the EV motorcycle pricing market, complimenting the bike’s middleweight status. And because the Arrow EV platform is scalable, with capacity for full-size and lightweight frames, the S2 Del Mar can excel in a category of its own.

Competing with brands such as Zero, LiveWire’s new offering seems content with the summation of its parts. Of course, one can always want more power and range, but is it really needed? Probably not, though the addition of DC fast-charging would be more than welcome. As LiveWire cranks these out of Harley’s York, Pennsylvania, plant for delivery in Spring of 2023, precise specifications and riding impressions of the on- and off-road capabilities of the bike are soon to come.
