Maserati is finally getting into the ultra-limited track-only special game. It's just introduced this, the Project24. Based on the Italian carmaker's mid-engine MC20, it's a 740-hp racer set to be produced in extremely low numbers.

The name Project24 is simply a codename, according to Maserati. It uses the same carbon monocoque chassis as the MC20 road car, but replaces the bodywork with unique carbon and natural fiber pieces. There's more aero, obviously, but also Lexan front and side windows to save weight. Underneath you'll find a built-in air jack system for quick access to the wheel wells and underside. Maserati claims a dry weight of under 2756 pounds.

The engine is the same twin-turbo Nettuno V-6 found in the road car, albeit with new turbos to make the extra power. It's connected to a six-speed sequential 'box that sends power to the rear wheels via a mechanical limited-slip differential. Other mechanical upgrades include adjustable dampers, adjustable anti-roll bars, a better braking system, and forged 18-inch wheels.

Though the Project24 isn't designed to compete in any specific racing series, it conforms to current FIA safety standards, with a full roll cage, a fire extinguisher system, and a homologated fuel tank. Inside you'll find an adjustable pedal box and steering column, as well as a swarm of telemetry data collection systems, plus normal race car stuff like adjustable racing ABS and traction control.

Maserati hasn't said whether all 62 examples of the Project24 have sold yet, or how much each will cost. Considering limited track specials like these usually sell out either before or the day of their launch, we wouldn't be surprised to hear they've all already been spoken for.
