Maximilian Guenther Keeps Formula E Streak Alive with Win in Tokyo
Maximillian Guenther secures victory for Maserati MSG Racing in the first Tokyo E-Prix, overcoming Oliver Rowland's early lead.
Guenther becomes Formula E's fifth different winner in five races this season.
Pascal Wehrlein of TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team leads the Drivers’ Championship, with Jaguar TCS Racing leading the Teams’ Championship.
As far as competitive racing series go, it might be difficult to find a series closer with a more balanced field than this year's ABB FIA Formula E Series.
On Saturday, Maserati MSG Racing's Maximilian Guenther made it five different race winners in five races in the all-electric open-wheel racing series this season, as he outran pole sitter Oliver Rowland of Nissan in the inaugural Tokyo E-Prix.
Guenther's winning margin at the first Formula E race in Tokyo was 0.755 second over Rolwand and was Guenther's fifth career win in Formula E. The final lap included three runs by Rwoland that Guenther was able to turn away.
"It’s a great track, it’s very challenging and very technical and then to win the first ever Tokyo E-Prix, it’s a huge feeling," Guenther said. "I think in general we can be really proud of what we’ve done this weekend: being in the top 3 in all the sessions, always up there and then to walk away with the winning trophy is great.
"I think we executed the race pretty well, the strategy was good and I pulled off a few good moves to move up and then we defended against Ollie right up until the last lap. It was pretty tight. It definitely wasn’t easy, I think I just surprised him in Turn 10.”
Reigning Formula E Drivers’ Champion, Jake Dennis of Andretti Formula E Team finished third, ahead of Tag Heuer Porsche Formula E Team's Antonio Felix da Costa and Pascal Wehrlein.
Wheleain left Tokyo leading the season points championship standings, two points clear of Nick Cassidy and nine points ahead of Rowland. Cassidy ran a spirited race on Saturday, finishing seventh after started all the way back in 19th.
