Mercedes is shifting away from pure internal combustion power in an effort to curb emissions and bolster its EV offerings. The current AMG E63 S, with its 603-hp twin-turbo V-8, doesn't exactly jibe with that sentiment. So it's waving goodbye to the pure V-8 drivetrain with a new special edition, limited to just 999 units globally.

The Mercedes-AMG E63 S Final Edition will be a sendoff for this generation of the company's BMW M5 fighter, which has been on sale since 2016. Offered in either sedan or wagon body styles, the Final Edition will come in just one color: Matte Graphite grey Magno. It'll also have 20-inch forged wheels and the AMG Night Package as standard, which blacks out all of the exterior trim. Inside you'll find the most expensive AMG seats as standard, as well as Nappa leather with contrast yellow stitching and illuminated door sill trims that read "AMG" in yellow. The center console features a badge that reads "1 of 999."

Under the hood you'll find the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 making 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. Power gets to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic and an AMG-tuned 4Matic system with a drift mode. Our testing of the normal E63 S puts the car from 0-60 in three seconds flat, onto a quarter-mile of 11.1 seconds at 126 mph. Top speed is presumably still electronically limited to 186 mph.

Mercedes hasn't said how many of the 999 Final Edition units will come to the U.S., or how many will be sedans versus wagons. Pricing is also a mystery for now, though it shouldn't be too much more than the normal car's $109,550 MSRP. We expect first deliveries to begin later this year.
