Electric minivans might not be in the U.S. just yet, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world isn't on top of it. The Maxus MIFA 9 is a Chinese-built electric minivan that's available in both China and Europe. With a single electric motor powering the front axle and a battery good for a WLTP-estimated range of around 275 miles, there's a lot to like about this people mover—but that doesn't mean it's perfect, or even good for the kinds of stateside families who would buy an EV minivan.
The Maxus MIFA 9 is a Chinese-built three-row electric minivan that we got the chance to test in Germany.
The Maxus 9 is propelled by a single 241-hp motor turning the front axle and powered by a battery pack with a claimed 90 kilowatt-hours of capacity.
Multiple seating options are available. In Europe the MIFA 9 is sold with individual airline-style seats in the second row and a three-seat bench for the third row. In China there is an optional six-passenger configuration with even more luxurious seats.
On European numbers, the MIFA 9 boasts a range of around 275 miles on the optimistic WLTP test cycle and has a top speed of 112 mph.
Maxus is a commercial brand belonging to SAIC Motor, the former Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, the largest auto company in China. The Maxus name was acquired from a U.K.-based van manufacturer, LDV, that went bankrupt in 2008.
European-market versions of the MIFA 9 get a single 12.3-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard, as well as a digital gauge cluster, but higher-spec versions in China have twin displays side by side.
Standard equipment on the MIFA 9 in Europe is generous, including electrically operated sliding doors and a full suite of active safety systems.
Prices in Europe run from the equivalent of just under $58,000 before taxes, to just over $74,000 for the top-spec version.
There are no plans to sell the Maxus MIFA 9 in the U.S.
