10 Must-See Highlights from the 2018 Chicago Auto Show
Over its history, Chicago’s auto show has transformed from a venue for major news and debuts, primarily of trucks, to a much more consumer-focused affair. Held every February at McCormick Place in the Windy City and often bedeviled by a good helping of lake-effect snow, the erstwhile “truck show” now plays host to a more varied and offbeat mix of vehicles. This year’s show featured a particularly eclectic group, and here we present the 10 most consequential:

2018 Fiat 500
In trying to make its diminutive Fiat 500 appeal to Americans, Fiat Chrysler has been throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. After dramatically dropping the price last year, Fiat is now adding horsepower to the entire 2018 500 lineup, making a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder standard equipment on every non-Abarth 500. (The Abarth and the California- and Oregon-only electric 500e continue unchanged.) READ MORE ›› - 3/10
2019 Ford Transit Connect Wagon
Nearly a decade after the Ford Transit Connect introduced the U.S. market to Euro-style compact cargo vans, the Blue Oval is giving its people/cargo hauler a series of updates as it faces continued competition from Chevrolet, Nissan, and Ram. READ MORE ›› - 4/10
2018 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid
Hyundai announced a mid-cycle update for the 2018 Sonata in the spring of 2017, but at the time, only the gasoline-powered models were redone. Now, Hyundai has brought the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models up to speed with design changes that align them with their gas brethren. READ MORE ›› - 5/10
Mopar Ram 1500
The 2019 Ram 1500 has yet to go on sale, but Ram is already eager to show off the many Mopar parts and accessories it plans to offer on its new half-ton pickup. This kayak-carrying, off-road-ready 2019 Ram 1500 4×4 crew cab is just one way Ram envisions consumers customizing their personal trucks. Starting life as a lower-level Big Horn model with the optional Sport package, this Ram has been decked out in accessories such as a 2.0-inch lift kit, a set of 18-inch wheels with red trim rings, chunky 35-inch tires, wheel-well flares, a pair of cast-aluminum running boards, front tow hooks, black hood stripes and emblems, and Mopar’s nifty new Ram Rack. Nissan 370Zki
Continuing with Nissan’s apparent mission to add tracks to an example of every vehicle it currently builds, the company would like to present you with a concept car based on the 370Z roadster and dubbed the 370Zki. If you looked at the photograph and pronounced it “370-Ski,” congratulations; you’ve won a dog that loves trucks! Pick him up at your local shelter. You’ll know him when you see him. Pickup-loving canines aside, what of this, the most zany application of snowgoing equipment that Nissan has yet pursued? Read on, snow speeder. READ MORE ›› - 7/10
2018 Subaru 50th Anniversary Editions
Subaru has come a long way since Malcolm Bricklin began importing the company’s 360 in 1968. It was an inauspicious start. The tiny, two-cylinder city car was notoriously labeled “the most unsafe car on the market” by the folks at Consumer Reports. But Subaru persevered, and while the little 360 shares little more than its horizontally opposed engine configuration with the brand’s current models, the 25-hp two-door remains an integral chapter in the story of Subaru’s eventual success in the U.S. market. In celebration of said success, Subaru is offering every vehicle it currently sells with a special 50th Anniversary Edition package. READ MORE ›› - 8/10
2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro
The Toyota 4Runner is delightfully anachronistic, a sport-utility vehicle for those hard-core types who wouldn’t be seen in a crossover. But then there are those who think a day without putting a little sunlight between the tires and terra firma is a day not worth living. For them, there’s the 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro. 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro
Breathe easy, Taco fanatics—Toyota has neither killed off the TRD Pro, its hardest-core, most off-road-ready factory Tacoma pickup, nor neutered its abilities. The limited-edition truck returns for 2019 packing the same Fox Racing Shox dampers, special exterior touches, and exclusive paint-color option that have defined the breed since 2014, before the Tacoma’s heavy refresh for 2016. 2019 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro
After disappearing from the lineup for 2018, the off-road-oriented TRD Pro trim level of the Toyota Tundra is back with a vengeance for 2019. It, along with the 2019 Tacoma and 4Runner TRD Pro models, gets a few notable mechanical updates including new shocks, revised springs, and new wheels as well as some visual updates inside and out similar to those bestowed on other Tundra models last year.
