The 11th Ferrari Road Car Ever Built Is for Sale

From Road & Track

Car collectors lose their minds over Ferraris from the 1950s and 1960s, but you know what's possibly cooler? A Ferrari from the 1940s. Only 29 Ferrari road cars were built between 1947 and 1949, and this 166 Inter Coupe is the 11th completed. If you want vintage Ferrari that's a bit more vintage than most, this one's for sale in the UK.

This 1949 166 Inter Coupe, chassis #021s, is listed for sale by UK dealer Talacrest, which specializes in classic Ferraris. The reason its chassis number is 21 and not 11 is because Ferrari used odd numbers for its road cars at the time. In addition to being one of the oldest Ferraris in existence, Talacrest proudly touts the fact that it's currently the oldest in the UK.

Based on the 166 Sport prototype race car, and produced between 1948 and 1950, the 166 Inter Coupe was Ferrari's first true road car. This example is one of 10 Ferraris with coachwork by Stabilimenti Farina, a coachbuidling firm started by Giovanni Farina, the older brother of Pininfarina founder Batista Farina.

The 166 Inter used a 90-hp, 2.0-liter V12 (!!) mated to a five-speed gearbox, which was rather high-tech in its day. Its chassis is a steel tubular space frame, and the total package has a dry weight of around one ton, per Ferrari.

This car has traveled all over the world with its various owners, with two notable appearances in the Mille Miglia in the early-2000s. Based on Talacrest's pictures, this Ferrari looks to be in great condition inside and out.

It might not be one of Ferrari's successful 1950s or 1960s race cars, but this pretty coupe is a fascinating piece of the company's important history. Plus, you probably won't see another at the local Ferrari meet, so there's that.
