Chrysler began selling the front-wheel-drive Dodge Colt and Plymouth Champ in the United States for the 1979 model year, but those were Mitsubishis shipped over from Japan.

A year earlier, American Plymouth and Dodge dealers began selling a semi-homegrown subcompact with front-wheel drive, built right here: the Horizon and Omni.

Derived from a Chrysler Europe-developed Simca platform, the "Omnirizon" proved a sales success and stayed in production through 1990. Here's a magazine advertisement for the first-year Horizon.
