Yahoo Autos 1979 Indy 500 Full Race Flashback
The Indy 500 is this weekend, so why not catch up on some of the greatest Indy 500s of the past? The 63rd Indy 500, held in 1979, was full of legendary names and some truly fantastic driving. Luckily, the entire race is available to watch on YouTube for free.
The 1979 race was the year Rick Mears took his inaugural 500 win-the first of four in his career. He was joined in the field by legends such as brothers Al and Bobby Unser, as well as racing icon A.J. Foyt. Mears' victory marked Roger Penske's second Indy 500 win as a team owner.
The time leading up the race was filled with controversy surrounding the split between the United States Auto Club (USAC) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART), as well as the use of a loophole discovered in the rules regarding wastegate manifolds. The race itself, though, was controversy-free, and full of pure racing action. Enjoy.
