The 1991 Honda Civic Hatchback Was Brilliant Because it Was Basic

From Road & Track

Back in 1991, a stripped out Honda Civic hatchback would cost you $6995. Adjusted for inflation, that's $12,360. Technically, you can still get a new car for that kind of money, but it definitely won't be a Civic. You have to dip down to a car like the Mitsubishi Mirage, which starts at $12,995.

But unlike, say, the Mitsubishi Mirage, Civics from the late 1980s and early '90s were built to be high quality cars. The shifter, for example, still feels modern and new almost 25 years later. And Honda would actually give you an independent rear suspension on the Civic. In 1991. The interior didn't offer much in the way of creature comforts, but like the tag line said at the time, it would get you where you needed to go.

As Mr. Regular points out in his latest review, Honda knew back then that basic transportation didn't need flashy technology and features to inflate the price. It needed to dependably get you from point A to point B. So that's what Honda offered-an incredibly well-built, practical car.

In a world where the least-expensive cars are chock full of tech, sometimes we wish quality was still the priority.
