Chrysler kicked off the minivan craze in grand fashion for the 1984 model year, with Lee Iacocca's fantastically successful, K-platform-derived Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager.

General Motors was a bit slow to respond, but the 1990 model year saw the debut of the wild-looking trio of U-Body front-wheel-drive minivans: the Oldsmobile Silhouette, Pontiac Trans Sport, and Chevrolet Lumina APV. These vans suffered from an unfortunate resemblance to the Black & Decker Dustbuster vacuum cleaner, and the dashboard was so deep that you could stash a couple of extra-large pizza boxes on it, but the vehicles sold pretty well.
